HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-03-22 Recognition (2)Q RECOGNIZING MAINE SCIENCE FESTIVAL WHEREAS, The City of Bangor hosts the Maine Science Festival (MSF), the first and only science festival in Maine, launched in 2015; and WHEREAS, MSFs mission is to stimulate interest in science among the general population, to heighten awareness of the impact of science on everyday life, and to demonstrate the diversity of scientific enterprise in Maine; and WHEREAS, In its first five years, over 50,000 Mainers from all over the state have joined this celebration of the sciences; and WHEREAS, In 2020, MSF was scheduled to start shortly after the World Health Organization declared COVID-1 9 a pandemic. MSF took the unprecedented step and incredibly difficult decision to cancel the upcoming Maine Science Festival; and WHEREAS, MSF worked with their presenters and partners to produce virtual versions of their Showcase Events throughout the rest of 2020. They also had virtual MSF Pop-up events and remained committed to highlighting the work of Maine's scientists; and WHEREAS, In September 2020, they launched the Maine Science Podcast. Each episode is a conversation with a Mainer who is working in science, engineering, technology, and innovation, a deep -dive into who they are and what they do; and WHEREAS, MSF has transitioned the 2021 Maine Science Festival to spotlight Maine science through online forums beginning in January through the end of March; and WHEREAS, Founder & Director Kate Dickerson 'hope(s) to have an October 2021 Maine Science Festival event built around the world premiere of the MSF -commissioned piece "The Warming Sea". We will then return to a full Maine Science Festival in March 2022."; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor thanks the Maine Science Festival for illuminating the integral role of science in society, deepening understanding, and dispelling the sense of intimidation that commonly surrounds scientific study. I NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Daniel J. Tremble, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize the Maine Science Festival for their dedication to science and the safety of their attendees and presenters, and encourages all our citizens to participate in Maine Science Festival events.
