HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-12-10 13-040 ORDINANCECOUNCIL ACTION Item No. 13-040 Date: December 10, 2012 Item/Subject: Ordinance, Amending Code of the City of Bangor — Chapter 228, Public Morals, - Designating Two Additional Safe Zones within the City of Bangor Responsible Department: Legal/Police Commentary: This ordinance will amend the Code of the City of Bangor to designate two additional safe zones within the City of Bangor. The Bangor Housing Authority has requested that Griffin Park and Birch Circle be added to the existing list of Safe Zones. The Maine Legislature has authorized municipalities to designate areas within a municipality that are frequented by minors as safe zones under 17-A M.R.S.A. §1101 (23). Areas so designated are required to be conspicuously marked with an informational sign using wording provided by the Commissioner of Public Safety. Both these areas meet the criteria established by the Legislature If approved; the law requires the Bangor Police Department to post the required signage. Bangor Housing Authority has agreed to provide the signs. This was reviewed and recommended by the Government Operations Committee on November 19, 2012. Ordinance, Amending the Code of the City of Bangor — Chapter228, Public Morals — Designating Two Additional Safe Zones Within the City of Bangor WHEREAS, the Maine Legislature has authorized municipalities to designate areas within a municipality that are frequented by minors as a safe zone under 17-A M.R.S.A. §1101 (23); and WHEREAS, there are numerous public parks and other areas within the City of Bangor frequented by minors; and WHEREAS, all areas listed in this Ordinance are areas frequented by minors; and WHEREAS, Bangor Housing Authority has requested that two additional areas be added to the existing List: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BANGOR That the Code of the City of Bangor is amended as follows: Chapter 228 Article V, Safe Zones §228-19 Designation of Areas as Safe Zones. Pursuant to the authority vested in the City of Bangor by 30-A M.R.S.A. §3253, the following areas are designated as safe zones under 17-A M.R.S.A. §1101(23).
