Item No. 13-040
Date: December 10, 2012
Item/Subject: Ordinance, Amending Code of the City of Bangor — Chapter 228, Public Morals,
- Designating Two Additional Safe Zones within the City of Bangor
Responsible Department: Legal/Police
Commentary:
This ordinance will amend the Code of the City of Bangor to designate two additional safe zones
within the City of Bangor. The Bangor Housing Authority has requested that Griffin Park and
Birch Circle be added to the existing list of Safe Zones. The Maine Legislature has authorized
municipalities to designate areas within a municipality that are frequented by minors as safe
zones under 17-A M.R.S.A. §1101 (23). Areas so designated are required to be conspicuously
marked with an informational sign using wording provided by the Commissioner of Public Safety.
Both these areas meet the criteria established by the Legislature If approved; the law requires
the Bangor Police Department to post the required signage. Bangor Housing Authority has
agreed to provide the signs.
This was reviewed and recommended by the Government Operations Committee on November
19, 2012.
