HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-02-08 21-089 Resolve 02/08/202121-089 02/08/2021 21-089 City Manager Resolve N/A Title, Resolve Supporting a Feasibility Study for Extending Passenger Rail Service from Brunswick through Augusta to Waterville and Bangor This Resolve supports Legislative Document (LD) 227, to conduct a feasibility study for extending passenger rail service from Brunswick through Augusta and Waterville to Bangor. In addition to the feasibility study LD 227 requests a plan be developed to implement passenger rail service through these areas along existing railroad corridors. The City of Bangor has supported similar initiatives to extend rail service from Portland, ME to Bangor in the past including in 2017 and 2001. Government Operations Committee 02/01/2021 Recommend for passage 50 First Reading 02/08/202121-089 CITY OF BANGOR RESOLVE 02/08/2021 21-089 Hawes Supporting a Feasibility Study for Extending Passenger Rail Service from Brunswick through Augusta to Waterville and Bangor Whereas, there is a growing need for economical and environmentally sound mobility services for residents and regional travelers that will help with access to housing, employment, medical, educational and entertainment opportunities with our neighboring communities; and Whereas, the City of Bangor would like to evaluate the feasibility of developing high-quality passenger train transit service from Brunswick through Augusta to Waterville and Bangor; and Whereas, the Maine State Legislature is considering legislation for the implementation of passenger rail service including but not limited to the Amtrak Downeaster service, from its present terminus at Brunswick along existing rail corridors, active and inactive between Brunswick, Augusta, Waterville and Bangor; Be it Resolved by the City Council of the City of Bangor that, the City of Bangor Supports a Feasibility Study for Extending Passenger Rail Service from Brunswick through Augusta to Waterville and Bangor.
