Shelter Plus Care promotes housing stability by paying rent for homeless individuals and families. Each recipient is strongly encouraged and expected to have a case manager to assist him/her with life skills such as healthy living, financial literacy, and employment. Normally, these funds are granted through the Maine Continuum of Care selective competition process. Due to COVID, there was no competitive process this year, and current grantees had their existing contracts automatically renewed. Participants in Shelter Plus Care grants must be experiencing homelessness and have one or more of the following diagnoses: mental illness, substance use, or HIV/AIDS. This grant will pay for housing for approximately 109 households.
