HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-01-25 RecognitionRECOGNIZING J.NORMAND MARTIN ON HIS 95TH BIRTHDAY WHEREAS, Paul Bunyan® the legendary giant lumberman, was born, raised and spent his mature days in Bangor; and WHEREAS, In 1959, local visual artist J. Normand Martin was commissioned to sculpt a model for a Paul Bunyan statue in honor of Bangor's Quasquicentennial, 125th anniversary; and WHEREAS, His 22-inch model was the template for the Paul Bunyan statue donated to Bangor on Bangor's and Paul Bunyan's 125th birthday, February 12, 1959, by New York -based builders Messmoor & Damon; and WHEREAS, Bangor's Paul Bunyan statue, "reputed to be the largest statue of Paul Bunyan in the world," continues to stand on a stone pedestal in front of the Cross Insurance Center at 515 Main Street; and WHEREAS The Paul Bunyan statue has been a beloved Bangor landmark for the last 62 years due to the iconic design by J. Normand Martin; and WHEREAS, J. Normand Martin celebrated his 95th birthday at Phillips -Strickland House in Bangor on January 10, 2021. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Daniel J. Tremble, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize J. Normand Martin for his contribution to the it of Bangor on the occasion of his 95th birthday. Given this the 25 th of January, 2021 Daniel JMemble, Mayor
