HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-07-27 20-230 Order 07/27/202020-230 07/27/2020 20-230 Community & Economic Development Order N/A Title, Order Authorizing a Commission on Cultural Development Grant of $3,336 to Penobscot Theatre Company for the Northern Writes Junior New Play Festival The City of Bangor's Commission on Cultural Development has recommended a grant of $3,336 to Penobscot Theatre for their Northern Writes Junior New Play Festival, a playwriting competition open to children ages 4-18, providing them with an outlet to process life during the pandemic. In the event that live performances of the works are not possible, Penobscot Theatre Company will develop virtual content. Funding will support artist/contractor fees, marketing, scholarships, and production costs. Support of this cultural project addresses the City Goals of: - Improve economic vitality of the City and promote job growth, economic development, cultural opportunities, and housing opportunities to support job growth and expansion and growth of tax base. - Developing a vibrant and accessible waterfront, downtown, and entertainment area to support arts, culture, and entertainment in Bangor and throughout the region. This item was reviewed and recommended for approval at the Business and Economic Development Committee meeting on July 20, 2020. Business & Economic Development Committee 07/20/2020 Recommend for passage 40 Consent 07/27/202020-230 CITY OF BANGOR ORDER 07/27/2020 20-230 Tremble Authorizing a Commission on Cultural Development Grant of $3,336 to Penobscot Theatre Company for the Northern Writes Junior New Play Festival WHEREAS, the City Council has made an appropriation of funds to support arts and cultural organizations; has established a Commission on Cultural Development; and has assigned the Commission the responsibility of reviewing grant applications from arts and cultural organizations, and to make recommendations for grant funding to the City Council; and WHEREAS, Penobscot Theatre Company submitted an application for funds to support their production of the Northern Writes Junior New Play Festival, a playwriting competition open to children ages 4-18, providing them with an outlet to process life during the pandemic; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development recommends the approval of the request due to the merits of the project and the benefits to the community; and WHEREAS, the grant application was complete, well organized, and met funding criteria; and WHEREAS, the Commission on Cultural Development and the Business and Economic Development Committee voted to recommend to the City Council approval of a grant in the amount of $3,336: Be it Ordered by the City Council of the City of Bangor that, A Commission on Cultural Development Grant of $3,336 is hereby authorized to Penobscot Theatre Company in support of the Northern Writes Junior New Play Festival.
