Okafor
Condemning Violence Against People of Color and Ensuring that All City Officials Uphold and Advance the
Goals of Social Justice
Whereas, On May 25, 2020 George Floyd was brutally killed by police officers in Minneapolis Minnesota; and
Whereas, video footage of this horrendous crime, in the name of law enforcement, showed the shocking and
horrific actions that ended his life; and
Whereas, the actions of these police officers eroded the trust and confidence in all police officers nationwide,
but especially with people of color; and
Whereas, understandably these actions have resulted in demonstrations across the globe as well as in Bangor;
and
Whereas, people of color and other demonstrators have raised legitimate concerns regarding police practices
and policies, use of force, bias in policing and police accountability; and
Whereas, The City of Bangor and the Bangor Police Department understand that building a great community
is based on mutual trust and greater transparency; and
Whereas, The City of Bangor is committed to building trust among all its residents, including continued work
and collaboration to ensure inclusion of our friends and neighbors of color; and
Whereas, In 2016 the Bangor Police Department and the Greater Bangor Area Branch of the NAACP
collaborated on a policy entitled “Unbiased Policing,” to ensure that people of color who engage with Bangor
Officers are treated fairly and equitably, period; and
Whereas, we recognize that the only way for Bangor to thrive is for all its citizens to thrive regardless of race,
ethnicity, or country of origin; and
Whereas, The City of Bangor is committed to being a place where all children can grow up, learn, and
contribute to the growth of our city without fear, to believe in their government officials, regardless of race;
and
Whereas, the City of Bangor, the Bangor Police and all city departments and employees will uphold and
advance the goals of social justice and that all members of the community including people of color have the
right to live peacefully , raise their families, and seek economic and academic opportunities free of
discrimination based on race; and
20-192 06/08/2020
The Bangor City Council, on behalf of the City of Bangor do hereby resolve that:
All Bangor citizens, visitors and guests shall, regardless of race, color or ethnicity be entitled to be treated with
compassion, dedication, and equality in pursuit of a peaceful life; and
In the strongest terms possible, that hatred and bigotry, overt and subtle, will not be tolerated by the City of
Bangor or its officers and employees in any form; and
That the City of Bangor commits to ensure that its employees are trained, in both implicit and explicit bias
against people of color and to ensure that the ideals of fairness and equity are upheld.
