The Homeland Security Grant Program is available to help improve preparedness and response capabilities for departments within the State. The total grant would be $4,225 with no local match required. Yearly, the Fire Department responds to active threat situations that have the potential for violence. In the past, departments were instructed to stage and wait for the threat to be neutralized before entering the scene. However, after action reviews of previous active threat/shooter/terrorist incidents have highlighted the need for rapid access to patients to perform life-saving interventions. These funds will be used to purchase tactical vests that will enable our on duty crews to respond safely knowing they have protection, allowing them to access victims faster to begin treatment and transport, thus increasing the chance of survival and minimizing injury.
