WHEREAS,
Zonta International was founded in 1919 in Buffalo, NY by a group of businesswomen;
and
WHEREAS,
The Zonta Club of Bangor was founded 10 years later, in 1929, to empower women
throughout the world through advocacy and service; and
WHEREAS,
On a global level, Zonta advocates for achieving gender equality and empower all
women and girls; and
WHEREAS,
While supporting the global mission, the Zonta Club of Bangor supports local
charitable organizations to meet the same goals; and
WHEREAS, The Club offers six $2,000 college scholarships each year for college -bound high
school seniors or adult women in the Bangor area; and
WHEREAS, Literacy Volunteers, the Bangor Area Recovery Network, Rape Response Services,
the Bangor Y and Girl Scouts of Maine are some of the area resources supported
through Zonta Club funding; and
WHEREAS, When the Zontonians identify a need, they fundraise. The Club donated $25,000 to
Sarah's House, a cancer hospitality house in Holden, at its inception, as well as
homemade quilts, time, and home cooked meals; and
WHEREAS, In addition to financial contributions, Zonta provides school supplies, feminine hygiene
kits and holiday gifts to women and children in local shelters; and
WHEREAS, The Club raises funds through events that engage the community like the annual
holiday marketplace at the Brewer Auditorium, a 5K road race, a Bingo tournament,
and wine -tasting events; and
WHEREAS, By dedicating their time, financial contributions, and leadership, the Zonta Club of
Bangor has been quietly supporting the community of Bangor for 90 years.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Clare Davitt, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the
citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize the Zonta Club of Bangor on their 90th anniversary, and look forward
to many more years of involvement and support.
