Title, Order
Authorizing the City Manager to Apply for $424,000 in Grant Funds from the State of Maine's Volkswagen
Settlement Allocation
The U.S. District Court in Northern California approved a partial consent decree to settle allegations
that Volkswagen (VW) had installed emissions defeat devices on 2.0 and 3.0 – liter vehicles sold or
leased in the United States. The 2016 and 2017 court settlements order VW to fund actions that
reduce nitrous oxide emissions, improving air quality and provide health benefits. Maine’s settlement
allocation totals approximately $21 million dollars. There are ten categories of which eligible actions
and expenditures are allowed by the VW Settlement. One of the ten categories is the replacement
of transit buses with an engine model year of 2009 or older. The $424,000 would be used to cover
the local share of the purchase of four new 35' buses to replace four buses that meet the engine
model year criteria.
The City previously applied for and was successful in receiving funds to replace five buses during the
first round of the State's issuance of Maine's Volkswagen Settlement Funds.
