HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-06-24 RecognitionBMGOR CM COUNCIL I RECOGNIZING THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD'S ICE BREAKING EFFORTS WHEREAS, The Penobscot River and Kenduskeag Stream in Bangor build up significaril ice over the winter months; and WHEREAS, The elimination of the Veazie Dam in 2013 has resulted in a larger and morl; unpredictable ice sheet; and WHEREAS, This ice collection could cause unpredictable and devastating flooding along the banks of the Penobscot River and Kenduskeag Stream without the relief created by ice breaking-, and WHEREAS, The United States Coast Guard commits several ice breaking vessels to the efforts of managing ice from Bucksport to Bangor; and WHEREAS, The US Coast Guard equipment and staff operate for hundreds of hours ea year breaking ice in the Penobscot; and i WHEREAS, The US Coast Guard efforts help minimize the threat of significant spring flooding. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Sarah Nichols, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize the efforts of the United States Coast Guard on their ice breaking efforts for the 2018 / 2019 winter season.
