HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-06-10 ProclamationPROCLAIMING JUNE AS PRIDE MONTH WHEREAS, Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots in June 1969 and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Americans; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor strives to be a community that is welcoming and supportive of all of its members regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor upholds the legal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ Mainers passed in 2005, as one of only twenty states in the Nation to include protections for discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression in employment, housing, education, credit and public accommodations; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor upholds the new legal protections by the State of Maine, including the gender neutral mark on drivers licenses, the prohibition of discrimination against LGBTQ people by health insurance companies, and the prohibition of licensed health care providers from practicing conversion therapy on minors; and WHEREAS, During the month of June, the City of Bangor hosts Bangor Pride, a weeklong celebration starting Sunday, June 16 th with events throughout the week, including a Rainbow Run, Worship Services, dances, and the Pride Parade and Festival; and WHEREAS, On Monday, June 1 Ph, there will be a memorial to Charlie Howard, a 23 year old gay man murdered for his sexuality in 1984, spurring citizens of the City of Bangor to hold vigils, memorials, and protests in his memory,- and VIAEREAS, Pride Month is an opportunity be supportive and to recognize the hard work of the thriving Bangor LGBTQ community in fighting for their rights and acceptance, and acknowledge the ongoing work of the citizens of Bangor to advocate for equal rights; and WHEREAS, The advocacy work of Pride Month continues on July 12th with the Fifth Annual Healthcare Conference, with this year's focus on Centering LGBTQ+ Rural Health; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor thanks the Health Equity Alliance and all their volunteers and sponsors in the community for working incredibly hard to make Bangor Pride 2019 representative, engaging, and affirming. it 11. 0 0 1, �ffa2�67rfs­p "rudrig, go' #-j -'WoUrd" Tr -d 1, 777-a-,5--rTY, members to be respectful and supportive of their fellow citizens regardless of race, gender, age, sexual trientation, or gender identity and expression, &ILA -A mWim,
