RECOGNIZING IJEOMA OBI, WINNER OF GIRLS ROCK! AWARDS
WHEREAS, Ijeoma Obi, 17, of Bangor is one of six Maine girls who received awards at the
Hardy Girls Healthy Women's 12th annual Girls Rock! Awards; and
WHEREAS, Hardy Girls, Healthy Women (HGHW) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
the health and wellbeing of girls and women; and
WHEREAS, HGHW created Girls Rock! Awards, an annual event that honors amazing girls
from around Maine who are leaders in community organizing,
entrepreneurship, health advocacy, STEM, athletics, and challenging
adversity, and
WHEREAS, Ijeoma Obi, 17, of Bangor, has won HGHW's 2019 STEM-GINEER Award for
her success in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) fields, and
WHEREAS, As a Sophomore, Ijeoma earned first place in her category at the Maine State
Science Fair and first place in the poster competition at the New England
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS); and
WHEREAS, She also was chosen to compete at the National JSHS Symposium in
Washington DC for her project entitled 'The Production of Bacterial Cellulose
for the Application of an, Adhesive Bandage Substitute.' The project is a novel
research idea that may lead to an innovative way to treat wounds; and
WHEREAS, Ijeoma was then selected for a summer internship through the National
Science Foundation's EPSCOR program; and
WHEREAS, Currently a junior in the STEM program at Bangor High School, Ijeoma is
working on an automated image program to examine cardiomyocyte
contractions. If successful, the project may lead to new ways of detecting early
onset heart disease; and
WHEREAS, HGHW calls Ijeoma Obi "a gritty kid with a strong work ethic. Her innovative
approaches to complex problems reflect her aptitude and interest in STEM."
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Sarah Nichols, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City
Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize Ijeoma Obi for her achievements and
dedication to excellence and look forward to her future contributions to pr, unity of Bangor
and the STEM field.
