WHEREAS,
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970 and this year marks its 4911,
anniversary; and
WHEREAS,
Called a "national teach -in on the environment," 20 million Americans of all
ages, walks of life, and political affiliations gathered in cities across the Nation
on the first Earth Day to demand basic protections for our planet and to commit
to leaving behind a healthier world for the next generation; and
WHEREAS,
The City of Bangor upholds its commitment to take actions to preserve and
improve this area's natural environment; and
WHEREAS,
The City has spent over fifteen million dollars cleaning the Penobscot River, and
continues to develop a Waterfront trail and event space; and
WHEREAS,
The City's Water Quality Department, has and will continue to invest tens of
millions of dollars in upgrading our sewer system, storm water treatment, and
watershed restoration; and
WHEREAS,
The City has been consistently r4cognized for thirteen years by the Arbor Day
Foundation as a Tree City USA; and
WHEREAS,
The City and its residents enjoy a unique relationship to the natural
environment as it borders the Penobscot, is bisected by the Kenduskeag
Stream, and encompasses the Penjajawoc Marsh and the Bangor City Forest;
and
WHEREAS,
City departments and volunteers invest in the City's twenty-one parks and
extensive trail systems for hiking, biking, and snowshoeing, all to integrate
nature into the everyday lives of residents; and
WHEREAS,
The City of Bangor continues working to leave behind a healthier City for the
next generation.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Sarah Nichols, Mayor of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and the
City of Bangor,
do hereby proclaim April 22, 2019 as Earth Day in Bangor, ME and encourage
all citizens to acknowledge all that has been achieved to improve the Penobscot River, our air
quality, and our City while looking forward to all that can be done.
