THAT Chapter VIII, Article 3, Section 2 of the Laws and Ordinances of
the City of Bangor be amended as follows:
Family: One or more persons related by blood, adoption o
marriage, living and cooking together as a single
housekeeping unit, exclusive of household servants.
A number of persons, but not exceeding two (2)
living and cooking together asa single housekeeping
nit, though not related by blood, adoption or
marriage,shall nes. be deemed to constitute a family.

SUBJECT: Referral of C.O. S 83-205 -.Definition of "Family"
to Planning Board
The Planning Board reviewed the zoning amendment contained in
C.O. 1 83-205 asrequested. by the City Council at its meeting of
June 13, 1983. Me Board voted unanimously to recommend this
clarifying amendment as proposed without change to the City Council.
The Board also indicated that this amendment was made in light of
the fact that the language in question (without the word "not")
was the same definition which was reviewed by the U.S. Supreme
Court in Village of Bell Terre v. Bursas - 416 U.B. 1, 39'1 Ed. 2d"
797, 94 S Ct. 1536 (1974) and therefore, it is the assumption of the
Planning Board that it was the original intent to use this definition
in the 1974 Zoning Ordinance.j/
