CITY COUNCIL ACTION
Council Meeting Date: April 22, 2019
Item No: 19-158
Responsible Dept: Code
Action Requested: Ordinance Map/Lot: N/A
Title, Ordinance
Amending Chapter 102, Electrical Code, Section 102-1, to Allow for Automatic Updating of the National
Electric Code
Summary
This ordinance amendment would adopt the most recent version of the National Electric Code (NEC) as
adopted by the State as the City's electric code, and would keep the City's version of the NEC in line with the
State version in the future.
Currently the City is using the 2008 edition of the National Electrical Code. The State, however, uses the 2017
version of the National Electric Code, with certain amendments. As a result, two separate electrical codes are
being enforced, one of them eleven years out of date.
This ordinance change allows the City to adopt the version of the National Electrical Code that is in line with
the version that the State adopts.
Language for the changes in the code is attached for your information and review.
