I concur with the Commission that this building is of such architectural significance for the community to merit its designation as a local landmark. If I can be of further assistance concerning this matter, please do not hesitate to let me know. Sincerely, G.I5 sit ew0[th. d[. Direct0, 1 EGS/slm Telephone: 202289-2133 85-308 Montgomery street Fire Station The Montgomery Street Fire Station was built in 1902 to plans by the prolific Bangor architect, Wilfred E. Mansur; in the same year, Mansur's Penobscot County Courthouse was constructed. Of brick with stucco and granite trim, it uses Mansur•s wan developed Colonial Revival or claesicizing vocabulary, with overtones of the Romanesque Revival in the ible round -head engine doors. Mansur had a weakness for the Romanesque add some of his best and most expressive buildings, e.g., the Bangor Theological Seminary Gyawasick, are in that style. Originally. the flavine slated base at the hip of the station roof supported a neo -Federal belfry and cupola, like the ones Mansur designed for the Columbia Street Baptist Church, also in 1902. This base is intact but the upper stages have been taken down. Other elements changed are the doors and all the windows, the round heads of the first -story windows having been filled in and standard sash inserted throughout. Besite these changes, its compact and stylish design makes the Montgomery Street Fire Station a valued city landmark. It deserves designationas a historic landmark because the continuation of its architectural integrity mould provide an anchor for the stability and ..good maintenance of the surrounding neighborhoods.
