THAT, WHEREAS, shortly after the assassination of the Reverend
Martin Luther King, Jr., the Federal Fair Housing Law (Title VIII of
the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was enacted by the Congress and the
President of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the month of April 1985 will mark the seven-
teenth anniversary of the signing of this historic piece of
legislation and, in those seventeen years, the U. S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development (which was delegated with the respon-
sibility of enforcement of the Law), state and local governments and
human rights organisations throughout the nation have assisted a
great many Americans in renting and buying apartments and homes
which would have otherwise been illegally denied to them; and
WHEREAS, there are still many Americans who are not being
permitted to buy or rent the homes of their choice because of their
race, color, religion, sex or national origin; and
WHEREAS, until we can make secure the right of every
American to live where he/she chooses in peace, our efforts must
continue to be devoted to creating and reinforcing in the people of
this nation a strong sense of awareness that freedom of choice in
housing is the right of every American; and
WHEREAS, the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development has asked the City of Bangor to actively participate
with the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in this
effort in 1985;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BANGOR THAT THE MONTH OF APRIL IS HEREBY PROCLAIMED AS FAIR
HOUSING MONTH.
