RIVER CITY MARKET DAYS
In almost every city in England a Saturday custom is a
visit to the local outdoor street market. A portion of the
downtown is set aside and local folks come to sell their
handmade pottery, art, vegetables, honey and all manner of
interesting things. This takes on a festive air as persons
of talent clown, sing, fiddle, and mime for the crowds.
Parking is off street in the areas normally used by business
workers during the week.
We in the Downtown River City Association see Downtown
Bangor as an ideal location for such a "Market Day' event.
The concept i currently being successfully used i several
areas of the United States and Canada. Fredrickton, M.B.
touts one in its tourist brochure.
As people love to be with people and enjoy an outdoor
family event/recreation, the Downtown Association feels
"Market Day" would bring people to the area on a day with no
parking pressures, provide than with a lively scene Of
simple entertainments to be enjoyed and savored, and
therefore change the image of downtown to that of an area
that is interesting, vital and cordial to the public.
For this to be aussful and enjoyable weekly(May
through Oct.)event much Planning, preparation and serious
effort is needed.
The Downtown River City Association is committed to
providing the overall coordination for this event but much
help will be needed from the downtown community. Your
Participation will be vital to all committees and funds will
be necessary for a media blitz for the first few weeks and
for other publicity, entertainment costs, decorations,
signs, toilet facilities, etc.
We ask for your support and help in this new effort in
the revitalization of Downtown Bangor.
Thank You.
