This resolve authorizes the appropriation of up to $8500 from the Bangor Police Department Drug forfeiture/seizure account for the purpose of purchasing a new canine for the police department. The police department utilizes two patrol canines to search for missing or wanted persons, illegal drugs and property as part of a mission to recover evidence at a crime scene. Canine Lex, one of the two current canines, is over ten years old and is beginning to experience work and age related injuries. Canine Lex's handler, Officer Linkletter, and the department veterinarian, have indicated that Lex is within a year of required retirement. Additionally, Lex was trained to hit on marijuana, which is now a legal substance in Maine. If approved, this would authorize the purchase of a new canine to replace Lex. This new canine would not be trained on marijuana.
