HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-05 Commission on Cultural Development Minutes City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development FRIDAY, October 5, 2018 8:30 a.m. Council Chambers, City Hall, 73 Harlow Street, Bangor Present: Andrea Littlefield, Liam Riordan, Jane Bragg, Lovern Stockwell, Owen Smith Absent: Allen Adams, Amy Roedar, Kim Stewart, Jared Hunnefeld, 1. Welcome Liam Riordan called the meeting to order. 2. Approval of September Meeting Minutes Lovern motioned, second, all in favor. 3. ARTober Update: discussion of plans to attend, staff, and promote ARTober Kickoff Event at BAE that evening (Oct. 5) -Liam raised funds from the McGillicuddy Humanities Center at UMaine, EMCC, and UMA-Bangor to support ARTober. -Liam helped arrange for student cultural presentations by UMaine graduate students (History and Inter-media) at the BAE (thanks Owen) and EMCC students (thank Heather Magee) at COEspace as part of the Kickoff. --the-date rack card and poster -s well as our grant application (with a Nov 1 deadline!) to share at the Kickoff event -Allen did a terrific job with an ARTober cover story in the Maine Edge -We will have an ongoing ARTober ad in the Maine Edge throughout the month, a major expense -the ARTober online calendar was not as robust as in past years 4. Other Business Discussion of Maine Arts Commission (MAC) \[biennial?\] conference held this year in Portland Jane was impressed but form of publicity and/or a fundraising tool Local figures there, in addition to CCD members, included Deb (Bangor Ballet?) and Lucas Richmond and Brian Hinrichs (BSO) Better collaboration between CCD and MAC \[and Maine Humanities Council\] could include: -invite MAC-award winners to be local speakers -stream conference to Bangor audience when not held locally -provide grants to support attendance at MAC and similar meetings of statewide importance Discussion of better promotion of Bangor as a cultural travel destination activities Maine magazine Need for (website?) Need to have stronger ties to City staff, the City Council (generally), and especially the Bangor Economic Development Committee (under whom the CCD operates) 5. CCD Grant Deadline (Nov. 1) This will be the central work for our December meeting, please publicize the grant program wide and far! 6. Future Business Staff turnover and anticipated departure of several CCD members will make the new year a good time to revisit our charge and strategic plan, which have not been updated in some time, a long-standing desire of Jane Recruiting new commissioners should be a priority Do we have the time, energy, and expertise to apply for major external grants to expand our work? 7.
