Title, Order
Authorizing the City Manager to apply for $527,325 in grant funds from the State of Maine's Volkswagen
Settlement Allocation
The U.S. District Court in Northern California approved a partial consent decree to settle allegations
that Volkswagen (VW) had installed emissions defeat devices on 2.0 and 3.0 – liter vehicles sold or
leased in the United States. The 2016 and 2017 court settlements order VW to fund actions that
reduce nitrous oxide emissions, improving air quality and provide health benefits. Maine’s settlement
allocation totals approximately $21 million dollars. There are ten categories of which eligible actions
and expenditures are allowed by the VW Settlement. One of the ten categories is the replacement
of transit buses with an engine model year of 2009 or older. The city is in the process of planning
the replacement of five transit buses that meet the above funding criteria. The amount of $527,325
is the city's match to replace the five transit buses.
