HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-10 Recognition (2)RECOGNIZING THE PRESENCE AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MAINE MUSEUM OF ART IN DOWNTOWN BANGOR NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Benjamin A. Sprague, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the it Council and citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize and thank the University of Maine Museum of Art and its staff and supporters for their continued presence and many contributions to the cultural, social, and economic life of the with a goal of providing the people of Maine with opportunities to experience and learn about the arts and their history and cultural significance; and WHEREAS, The University Art Collection became the University of Maine Museum of Art in 1980s and through mutual efforts and positive collaboration moved to Downtown Bangor in 2002; and WHEREAS, The Museum has drawn thousands of people to Downtown Bangor since 2002 and been a cornerstone member of the Downtown Bangor community; and WHEREAS, The University of Maine Museum of Art is known throughout the region and beyond as a regional center for fine arts and through its exhibitions, events, and staff contributions has contributed significantly the resurgence of the arts in Downtown Bangor-, and WHEREAS, The Museum is the only institution that is fully owned by the State of Maine that houses a permanent fine arts collection, which is now made up of more than 4,000 original works of art and celebrates renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Hopper, Pablo Picasso and others, while also holding a preeminent collection celebrating the heritage of Maine art and artists; and WHEREAS, Over the course of a year the Museum hosts hundreds of events available to the public free of charge including activities for children, family programming, classes, and lectures. NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Benjamin A.
