The University of Maine Systems Board of Trustees will be considering the request also n May 23. WHEREAS, By Agreement dated December 17, 1970, the City of Bangor leaned to the University of Maine a certain parcel of land consist- ing of approximately 74 acres along Maine Avenue (formerly Illinois Avenue) for educational purposes in conjunction with the operation of the institution's Bangor campus; and WHEREAS, staff members of both the University of Maine System and the City of Bangor have concluded that a portion of the said 74 acres will not be needed by the University for educational purposes or planned expansions of the Bangor campus; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor is in need of additional land located in said area for purposes of redevelopment of the area and adjacent lands for proper General Aviation uses and compatible development; and WHEREAS, the University and the City of Bangor are willing to cooperate in creating the above-described redevelopment; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor is willing to pledge its support to the University in the following steps: 1. Assistance in the successful relocation of certain sial service agencies presently occupying aged, wood -frame, World WarII-erabuildings presently existing an aid leased pre- mises, in order that such buildings can be removed; 2. A plan of redevelopment compatible with existing University and other uses attractive to the area. 3. Recognition of the University's need for land for short and long range expansion of its campus and educational uses else- where within the 74 acre leased area by: Deeding to the University for campus expansion for educational uses of a tract of the leased area located northeasterly of Texas Avenue at the northeasterly end of the leased land, estimated to be 15 acres more or less. NOW, THEREFORE, By the City Council of the City of Bangor: RESOLVED, THAT the City Manager, on behalf of the City of Bangor, is hereby authorized and directed to request that the Board of Directors of the University of Maine System release to the City of Bangor from the said existing lease an estimated AO acres of land as Outlined on the attached sketch; RESOLVED, THAT, the City Manager is hereby authorized and directed to execute all documents and to take all necessary action for purposes of com- pleting the above-described transactions. The amendment would delete the entire paragraph at the top of the page two: also, delete the last paragraph on page 2 and substitute the new paragraph typed in. The University has agreed not to pursue title to the middle area still i its lease, as was discussed by the Finance Com- mittee. The University of Maine System Trustee Committee o Public Facilities approved the release Monday morning without this condition, and the full Board of Trustees approved the release of the land area as described in the Council Resolve on Monday afternoon. - With the amended Council resolve, the project can go forward C Ed McKeon ne-Auenue iness elopment Park Existing.
