The City of Bangor's Commission on Cultural Development has unanimously voted to grant $4,500 to the Penobscot Nation to help fund marketing and presentation costs associated with public presentations for their Wabanaki Social Gathering and Birch Bark Canoe Regatta. The Wabanaki Confederacy Conference offers the opportunity to educate the Bangor Region about the history of the Wabanaki Confederacy and its homeland. Through public displays and presentations, the Penobscot Nation hopes to create educational opportunities to the Bangor region while marketing their event to increase public awareness. Penobscot Nation's project, while targeted at Bangor area residents, includes elements that occur outside the City, which staff felt was beyond the charge of the CCD. Staff met with Tribe representatives and confirmed that $800 requested would be to promote non-Bangor events. The rest are for the Bangor events. Therefore, staff recommended an award of $3,700 for Penobscot Nation. This item was reviewed and $3,700 was recommended for approval by the Business & Economic Development Committee at its July 16, 2018 meeting.
