HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-06-11 Proclamation11",, t. 6. 44 PROCLAIMING JUNE TO BE ALZHEIMER'S AND BRAIN AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, Alzheimers is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life; and WHEREAS, Today, there are 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050; and WHEREAS, There are 37,000 Mainers living with Alzheimer's or related dementias; and WHEREAS, Alzheimer's is currently the 61t' leading cause of death in Maine and of the top 10 killer diseases, it's the only one without an effective prevention, treatment or cure; and WHEREAS, Nearly 1 in every 3 seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer's or another dementia; and WHEREAS, The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's and other dementias is estimated to total $77 billion in 2018, increasing to $1,1 trillion by mid-century'; and WHEREAS, There are approximately 69,000 unpaid caregivers in the US and in 2017 they provided 79,000,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $992,000,000; and WHEREAS, The City of Bangor has been named an "Age Friendly" community and has worked in partnership with AARP and our other area healthcare institutions to support individuals and families working through the challenges of Alzheimers and other related illnesses; and NOW, THEREFORE, 1, Benjamin A. Sprague, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council, and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the month of June to be Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month in the City of Bangor and pledge our continued support and cooperation to AARP and other organizations working to take on these challenges together in our region.I k11,16 101,1�1,,10 - Ajad .12 Given this the 11th day of June, 2018.
