Title, Order
Authorizing the City Manager to apply for a grant from the Bangor Rotary Charities in the amount of $449.85
to purchase infant carriers.
This order will authorize the City to apply for a grant in the amount of $449.85 from the Bangor
Rotary Charities to purchase infant carriers. The Public Health and Community Services Department
serves as an Inspection and Distribution site for the State of Maine Bureau of Highway Safety Child
Passenger Seat Safety Program which provides free car seat inspections for families in the greater
Bangor region. The program also provides financially qualified families with one free car seat per
child.
If approved, the city will apply to Bangor Rotary Charities for a grant to purchase fifteen (15) infant
carriers for eligible families who use public transportation. The use of traditional car seats is not
permitted on buses because there is no way to secure them safely. Further evidence shows that it is
difficult to safely secure a child manually during an accident. To improve safety of parents traveling
with infants, the grant funds would allow us to purchase a carrier that secures to the parent. It
allows the parent both hands free to secure themselves and therefore the child in the event of an
accident. This grant would allow for the purchase fifteen (15) carriers @$29.99 for a total of $449.85
This item was reviewed and approved at the June 4, 2018 Government Operations Committee
Meeting.
