Minutes of the Tree Board Meeting 4/19/18 5:00pm at Public Works
The Tree Board meeting began at 5:05 PM with Dana Wardwell, David Rice, Greg Edwards and Erica
Kaufman attending. Dana Wardwell began the meeting by commenting that the missing trees on the Main Street
corridor will be replaced with the species specified in the plans for the 2016 Main Street paving project. Dave Rice
stated that trees in downtown that are missing will be replaced with either Lindens or Ginkgos. Greg asked if the
missing tree in West Market Square could be replaced with a Ginkgo to which Dave responded yes, if the underground
utility locations leave enough room for the size trees he has. Other locations mentioned were; Main Street in front of
Discovery Museum, Hammond Street at Franklin Street and Broad Street in front of Evinrudes.
The replacement of the two locust trees that were removed on Columbia Street last fall was discussed. Greg,
Erica and Dave were all in favor of replacing these with some good sized locust Dave has in inventory. What can be
planted there will depend on the location of utilities. Dana will look for new boxes for the new trees and Public Works
will repair the existing wood boxes on the remaining trees. Greg asked when planting will begin and Dave responded
April 23.
Dana then brought the GIS tree inventory up on the screen and reviewed it with the committee. Dana explained
that the inventory was not complete and hoped to have an intern complete it this coming summer. Greg asked if the
inventory will be available on the web site, to which Dana responded yes, and could the committee receive an excel
copy to review to which Dana responded yes, he will send one tomorrow.
Under other items for discussion, Greg asked if some porous pavements or concrete be used in sidewalks so
trees could receive more water. Dana stated we had tried this on Franklin Street a few years ago but the salt
deteriorated the concrete quickly in a couple of years, but Dana will discuss this with the city engineer. Greg also
asked about putting drip bags near trees, especially newly planted trees, so they could receive more water. He also
asked if wrought iron tree guards could be installed on some downtown trees as a trial. Green Drinks may be able to
purchase a few. Dana responded he will check but did not see a problem installing tree guards purchased by Green
Drinks. Greg also asked if some storm structures that assist providing water to trees could be included in the
Pickering Square project. Dana will discuss this with the City Engineer.
The date of the next meeting will be sometime in September and the meeting was adjourned at 6:00 pm.
