RECOGNIZING LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF BANGOR
WHEREAS,Literacy Volunteers of Bangor has changed lives by offering free literacy tutoring
since 1969; and
WHEREAS,In 2016, a total of 249 students improved their literacy with the help from 415
dedicated volunteers putting in 16,692 volunteer hours; and
WHEREAS,Of those 249 students, 59 entered higher education or training programs, 54
became more involved in their children’s education, 25 got a job or a better one,
13 voted for the first time and 6 obtained a driver’s license; and
WHEREAS,According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, 37% of Bangor’s population are
operating at the two lowest reading and comprehension levels; and
WHEREAS,Low literacy contributes to lower incomes, higher unemployment rates, lower
quality jobs, and a lack of community engagement; and
WHEREAS,The delivery of free, quality literacy support is funded by a budget raised each
year entirely through private support; and
WHEREAS,The entire Bangor community benefits from the work that Literacy Volunteers of
Bangor does to help our citizens, co-workers, friends and neighbors.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Benjamin A. Sprague, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of
the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize Literacy Volunteers of Bangor
for their dedication to improving reading and English language skills, thereby helping citizens of
Bangorimprove their quality of life, and offerour thanks for their contribution to the community.
