RECOGNIZING THE 100 ANNIVERSARY OF THE QUIPUS
WHEREAS, the Quipus is a private, non-profit women's organization established in 1912 to
encourage the pursuit and study of the arts and culture, particularly through the
medium of drama and theatre, and to assist in support of specific child health
and welfare projects; and
WHEREAS, the term Quipus was derived from the word “quipu,” referring to an Incan Indian
device used to keep track of accounts. The ladies chose this device to represent
ties among themselves and with their community; and
WHEREAS, their first charitable activity took place in 1918, when they supported a French
war orphan after World War I; and
WHEREAS, in 1920, The Quipus started public performances of plays, using the profits to
establish, man and support the Bangor Dental Health Clinic, providing poor
children access to dental care; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, the Quipus donated their large collection of historic clothing to the
Bangor Museum and Center for History; and
WHEREAS, currently, The Quipus donates, annually, to the Bangor School Children's
Fund, the United Way of Eastern Maine and Bangor Museum and History Center;
and
WHEREAS, The Quipus annually gives the Quipus/Frances Reynolds Stanley Speech and
Drama Award to a deserving, graduating, Bangor High School scholar; and
th
WHEREAS, The Quipus will be celebrating their 100 Anniversary.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CARY M. WESTON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf
of the Bangor City Council and citizenry, do hereby recognize The Quipus for their 100 years of
service and charitable efforts in the Bangor community.
