Nichola House The Eugene C. Nichols house, on the corner of High and Union Streets abutting Bangor's High Street Historic District, is an important residence for inclusion on Bangor's list of historic properties. The home was built in 1895 at the request of Mr. Nichols, former owner of the Isaac Farrar Mansion. Mr. Nichols chose to construct the home in one of the most important residential districts in the city's downtown. The home was designed by Wilfred E. Mansur, one of Bangor's most prominent architects, and contains many of Mansur's signature elements. The queen Anne design includes a rap -around porch with balustrades, the asymmetric roof line typical of the period, and the impressive three-story round tower Mansur made popular in a handful of his other important residences. It also includes diamond windows in the high, truncated dormers and elaborate cornice brackets, both common elements in Mansur's other works. The interior of the home retains its original fine interior woodwork and detailing, much of which was fabricated at the Morse Mill. Upon the City Council's referral, the Historic Preservation Commission voted on September 13, 1989, to designate the Nichols house a historic property under the city's Historic Preservation ordinance. In the Commission's studied opinion, the - home meets all criteria for inclusion in the High Street Historic District. The modern addition, though intrusive, does not affect the home's eligibility for inclusion in the district. The current owner, who requested historic designation for the property, plane to remove the addition in the course of a comprehensive restoration spanning the next two to three years. 89-383 APPLICATION POR HISTORIC PRESERVATION DESIGNATION TYPE Historic District Q Historic Site Q Historic Landmark Applicant RUTHDateTP NPAO-PSTON Date JVNC W %I Mailing Address 14S %1u nnl ST.
