HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-05-14 Recognition (2) RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF FRITZ AND CAROLINE OLDENBURG TO THE PRESERVATION OF OPEN SPACE IN BANGOR, MAINE WHEREAS, natural areas with trail access are an important urban amenity and add to the City of Bangor’s quality of place; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor’s Comprehensive Plan has identified certain areas as appropriate to set aside as open space for wildlife habitat, groundwater recharge, and recreational uses; and WHEREAS, implementation of the Comprehensive Plan depends on the vision and support of private landowners above and beyond the requirements of city ordinances; and WHEREAS, the area around Penjajawoc Marsh, and the open space between Penjajawoc Marsh and Caribou Bog, is of outstanding ecological importance for the richness and variety of its unbroken expanse of wetland and upland habitat; and WHEREAS, Fritz and Caroline Oldenburg have given gifts of land totaling 423 acres to Bangor Land Trust to be conserved in perpetuity for public benefit; and WHEREAS, through these gifts from Fritz and Caroline Oldenburg significant habitat will be forever protected and allowed to flourish; and WHEREAS, through the generosity of Fritz and Caroline Oldenburg the people will forever have acres of open space to learn about, experience, and enjoy wildlife and habitat. NOW, THEREFORE, I, CARY M. WESTON, COUNCIL CHAIR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize Fritz and Carline Oldenburg for their generous contribution of land for the preservation of open space for benefit of the public.
