Recognizing Senator Susan M. Collins for her Efforts Permitting
Heavy Truck Loads on Maine’s Federal Interstates
WHEREAS, Heavy truck loads on non-interstate roadways have long been a cause of concern for
Maine municipalities and residents; and
WHEREAS, Senator Collins has lead the effort to allow trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds to
travel on Maine’s federal interstates including I-95, I-195, I-295 and I-395; and
WHEREAS, In 2009, a one year pilot program written by Senator Collins was included in the 2010
Omnibus Appropriations bill, and the results of this program demonstrated a significant
reduction in the number of crashes involving trucks on Maine’s local roads; and
WHEREAS, following the Pilot Program, Senator Collins continued to work on gaining passage of this
legislation including successfully negotiating an agreement at the Conference Committee
level which ultimately approved a 20 year compromise agreement; and

WHEREAS, On November 28, 2011, President Obama signed the Fiscal Year 2012 Transportation
Funding bill that includes the provision allowing heavy trucks to use Maine’s Interstate
system.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CARY M. WESTON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on
behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize and thank
Senator Susan M. Collins for her tireless efforts to improve the safety of all motoring
residents and visitors. Heavy vehicles will now be able to travel on Maine’s federal
interstates instead of being forced onto Maine’s secondary roads and downtown streets.
Her determination and willingness to make Maine’s roadways safer for everyone is truly
appreciated and applauded.
