JQaCINS ICUSE 84HCfJR, IMINE 63 V PINE STPEET The Charles W. Jenkins House, couplete3 in 1846, provides Bangor with a fine exanple of darestic Gothic Mvfval architecture. The two and one- half story structure retains wast of its original Gothic detail: a high Central gable containing a quatrefoil wind , a balcarry with a jigsa wooden parapet, and triangular louvers5 architraves over the windws. Summery impetus for the use of the Gothic style in Banogr had been provmdoi a decade earlier by the influential design of St. Jtlin's Episcopal Church (1835-6, dunes 1911), an iaportant early work of Richard Upjohn (1802-78). Lp]c1nn, a leaning figure in the developrent of Aaerican church architecture, wast on to design Trinity (4urch, !]eve York City (1846). Adaptation of Gothic forms and details to local domestic structures resulted in part from the precedent established by the construction of 8t. John's Owrch. Consequently the builder/architects of the Charles W. Jenkins Huse, Andrew Wiggin (1811-1900) and Joseph Ftry 1811-1854), would have been familiar with the stylistic vocahluary of the Gothic Revival when called upon to construct a new daacile for aerchant and lwnber-men, Charles W. Jenkins. Additional inspiration for use of the Gothic style in domestic building was available from the influential publications of Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-52). Designs for picturr-.que rural, Gothic cottages appeared in A Treatise on the Theory and Practice of landscape Gardening (1841) and Cottage Residences 11842). Architecthral Historian, Deborah ThO son, acl ledges the likely derivation of the form and design of the Charles W. Jenkins Ibgse from Downi:g's publications, yet, she points out that it differs from the Gothic cottage designs bee use of its considerable site (36' x 381), clapboard siding, and the means chosen to nake the pointed Gothic windows. Hence, the author. concludes that the Q les W. JeNcins Muse is "a" sinple and effective lural interpretation of the IGithiC Psvival) style.* The Bangor Historic Preservation G nasion recamends the application for historic landaark designation of the Charles W. Jenkins House. Its decision is based upon careful study of the structure's exterior form and detail arcd overall condition, as well as a review a synopsis of its historical and archibactural significance by architectural historian Deborah Thrngson. The structure fully qualifies for historic landmark (continund) 89-373 designation acmrdfng to the ordinances of the Bangor Historic Preservation Cgmussion. Purthemore, the Godes W. Jenkins house is listed as eligible for naninatiw to the National Register in the Hangar Historic Resources invents (Augusta', Mire: Naive Historic Preservation G ttee, 1975. Fane G. 9hettiewortln, Jr. Revised edition 1986. behorah T mpson), and thus meets historic preservation ordinance qualification 3.6. Mne t y application for historic Ludmark designation indicates the dedication of the Jenkins House Associates to the restoration and protection of this unique structure, now safely relocated from Adams Street to Pine Street. Approval of the Camdssion's recartmdation x d guarantee the survival of the Ganes W. Jenkins Ibuae, one of Bangor's few onnaining of dmesttc Gothic Revival buildings.
