RECOGNITION OF THE ORONO BOARD WALK VOLUNTEERS AND RESOLUTION
SUPPORTING RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ORONO BOARD WALK
WHEREAS, the Orono Bog Boardwalk has been in operation since May 2003; and
WHEREAS, approximately 20 percent of the length of the Boardwalk is in the City of Bangor
and 80 percent is in the Town of Orono; and
WHEREAS, in 1974 the National Park Service designated the Orono Bog as a National
Natural Landmark because of the outstanding features of the bog; and
WHEREAS, during the past nine years at least 200,000 visits have been made to the
Boardwalk by residents and visitors, with thousands of school children, including
those from Bangor schools, have participated in the Boardwalk’s guided tours;
and
WHEREAS, the Orono Bog Boardwalk provides access for persons who are unable, for
reasons of disability, to traverse a unique type of wetland, a northern peatbog;
and
WHEREAS, the Orono Bog Boardwalk has deteriorated substantially because of wood–
decaying fungi, carpenter ant infestations, and heavy use and is becoming
difficult to keep repaired and safe.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CARY M. WESTON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf
of the Bangor City Council recognize the Orono Bog Boardwalk volunteers and support their
efforts to raise sufficient funds to reconstruct the Boardwalk with composite material that will
last well into the foreseeable future.
