HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-10-10 Recognition (2) RECOGNIZING and CONGRATULATING BONNIE IRWIN ON HER 2012 SMOKE-FREE AWARD PRESENTED BY THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION IN MAINE WHEREAS, Bonnie Irwin, Health and Community Services Tobacco Coordinator, has been awarded the 2012 Smoke-Free Award for her tireless work to protect Maine people from dangerous secondhand smoke exposure by creation of smoke free environments, and WHEREAS, Bonnie’s dedication to smoke-free living has led to significant policy changes in the Bangor region, compelling her to advocate and support the adoption of a 100% tobacco-free policy on the University of Maine campus, as well as advocate and support the adoption and strengthening of smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing, child care and health care settings, and WHEREAS, One colleague stated in nominating Bonnie “Her successful efforts are a testament that public health does not happen overnight, but that with dedication, can occur and be sustainable over time. She is likely one of the most hardworking, dedicated advocates for smoke-free environments that Maine has ever seen”, and WHEREAS, Bonnie has been an active member of the Breathe Easy Coalition, serving on the Executive Committee and participating with numerous work groups to develop materials that support the creation of smoke-free environments. NOW, THEREFORE, I, CARY M. WESTON, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND CITIZENS OF BANGOR, do hereby join with the American Lung Association of Maine in honoring Bonnie Irwin for her outstanding leadership and tireless work toward a smoke-free Maine.
