Congratulating Bangor Museum and History Center and Bangor High School for
Receiving National Recognition from the American Association for State and Local History
WHEREAS, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) annually presents the
Leadership in History Awards, its most prestigious national recognition, for achievement in
the preservation and interpretation of state and local history; and
WHEREAS, the Bangor Museum and History Center and Bangor High School have been selected to
receive the AASLH Leadership in History Award of Merit for 2012 for their project entitled
Exploring Historic Landscapes Using GIS: The Great Bangor Fire of 1911; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the Award of Merit, Exploring Historic Landscapes Using GIS: The Great
Bangor Fire of 1911 was also selected as a 2013 History in Progress (HIP) Award winner by
the Leadership in History Awards Committee; and
WHEREAS, the HIP award is an additional award based upon a project that is highly inspirational;
exhibits exceptional scholarship; and/or is exceedingly inspirational in terms of funding,
partnerships, creative problem solving or unusual project design and inclusiveness; and
WHEREAS, the submission by Bangor Museum and History Center and Bangor High School was one of
only three Award of Merit winners to be additionally selected for the History in Progress
award; and
WHEREAS; these two recognitions conferred upon Bangor Museum and History Center and Bangor
High School demonstrate their excellence in the collection, preservation and interpretation
of important Bangor history.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, NELSON E. DURGIN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the
City Council and the Citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize and congratulate the Bangor Museum and
History Center and Bangor High School for receiving these distinguished Awards. The award recipients
are commended for their outstanding leadership efforts to preserve and promote local history.
