PROCLAIMING SEPTEMER ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH
WHEREAS, alcohol and drug related issues are a major social and economic problem in Bangor and
Penobscot County, costing the area an estimated $100 million annually; and
WHEREAS, addiction problems, a major health problem that affects people of all ages and
backgrounds due to its significant medical, societal, and economic costs, are occurring
at a younger age, with the number of young people below the age of 25 seeking
treatment for addiction increasing by 62% between 2000 and 2005; and
WHEREAS, addiction is a treatable disease with a return of $7 for every $1 invested in treatment
and is as successful as the treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes,
hypertension, and asthma; and
WHEREAS, thousands of recovering addicts and alcoholics live in the greater Bangor area, leading
productive lives, serving as assets to the community. and volunteering countless hours
of service in carrying the message of recovery; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bangor has aggressively responded to the issues of alcohol and other drug
abuse by supporting the formation of the Bangor Area Recovering Community Coalition,
Broadening the Base for Recovery: Promoting Recovery Pathways in the 21st Century,
and the Bangor Area Summit on Recovery that will be held on September 4th as part of
National Recovery Month;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, SUSAN M. HAWES, COUNCIL CHAIR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on
behalf of the City Council and citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2008
as ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH and call upon our citizens to observe this
month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies in support of this year’s theme, “Join
the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery.”
