HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-03-22 Proclamation (2) PROCLAIMING APRIL 5-11, 2010 NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK WHEREAS, healthy people and communities are the center of any strong and vibrant society; and WHEREAS, the goal of public health is to prevent disease, improve the health and quality of life of all, eliminate disparities in health, and reduce future health costs; and WHEREAS, the work of improving the health of the community, led by the Bangor Region Public Health Advisory Board, is ongoing and requires strong partnerships based on common goals among government, Bangor Health & Community Services, community based organizations, activists, businesses, schools, health care professionals and community members; and WHEREAS, seventy-five percent of healthcare costs result from chronic diseases largely caused by preventable behaviors such as tobacco use, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption; and WHEREAS, citizens can make a difference in the health of our children by encouraging healthy eating habits, promoting safe spaces for physical activity; reducing damaging toxins in our buildings and pollutants in our air including smoke from tobacco, and WHEREAS, preventative health measures, such as immunizations, substance abuse and tobacco prevention, oral health, car seat and seatbelt use, supplemental food programs for mothers and infants, and early childhood education improve childhood outcomes and reduce overall costs to society; and WHEREAS, despite challenges, public health professionals and lawmakers support policies that emphasize prevention and support a strong public health infrastructure; and WHEREAS, by making a change in our community, we will improve the health of our nation. NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD I. STONE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the week of April 5-11, 2010 as PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK in Bangor and call upon the people of Bangor to observe this month by helping our families, friends, neighbors, co-workers and leaders better understand the importance of public health to a successful health system in light of this year’s theme, A Healthier America: One Community at a Time. nd Given this the 22 day of March 2010. _________________________________ Mayor Richard I.
