HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-08-24 Proclamation PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH WHEREAS, alcohol and drug related issues are a major social and economic problem in the City of Bangor and Penobscot County, costing the area an estimated $100 million annually; and WHEREAS, addiction problems are occurring at a younger age, with the number of people below the age of 25 seeking treatment increasing 632% between 2000 and 2005 in; and WHEREAS, addiction treatment provides a $7 return for every $1 invested and is as successful as the treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma; and WHEREAS, thousands of recovering addicts and alcoholics lead productive lives, are assets to the community, and volunteer countless hours of service in carrying the message of recovery; and WHEREAS, the City of Bangor has aggressively responded to the issues of alcohol and other drug abuse through supporting the formation of the Bangor Area Recovering Community Coalition and the Bangor Area Summit on Addiction Recovery to be held at the Bangor Civic Center on September 10th as part of National Recovery Month; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERRY G.M. PALMER, JR, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2009 as ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH in Bangor and call upon our citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies in support of this year’s theme, “Supporting Recovery as a Community Responsibility: Together We Learn, Together We Heal.” th Given this the 24 day of August 2009. __________________________________ Gerry G.M.
