HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-08-27 Proclamation PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH WHEREAS, alcohol and drug related problems continue to be prevalent in Maine, and addiction is a major health problem that affects people of all ages and backgrounds due to its significant medical, societal, and economic costs; and WHEREAS, addiction is a treatable disease, and treatment of addiction is as successful as the treatment of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma; and WHEREAS, recovering individuals restore lives and obtain employment and home ownership while healing relationships within families and communities; and WHEREAS, Recovery Month is an opportunity to increase public understanding that alcohol and drug disorders can be managed effectively when the entire community supports treatment programs, treatment providers, and those in need; and WHEREAS, celebrating individuals in recovery and their families, and saluting the health care providers who helped them obtain treatment educates our community about the benefits of treatment and affirms that such providers deserve adequate recognition for their services; and WHEREAS, to help achieve this goal, the City of Bangor Health and Welfare Department, in conjunction with Federal and State Agencies, invites all residents of Bangor to participate in National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Richard D. Greene, Mayor of the City of Bangor, on behalf of the City Council and citizens of Bangor, do hereby proclaim the month of September 2007 as ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH in Bangor and call upon our citizens to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and ceremonies in support of this year’s theme, “Saving Lives, Saving Dollars.” th Given this the 27 day of August 2007. __________________________________ Mayor Richard D.
