PROCLAIMING JANUARY 2009 A TIME FOR “PENOBSCOT READS”
WHEREAS, the Bangor Public Library is nationally recognized for both its quality and
for the high circulation levels it achieves; and
WHEREAS, the Library sponsors the "Penobscot Reads" campaign, a program
designed to involve all Penobscot County residents in reading the same
book at the same time and participating in discussions about it; and
WHEREAS, the intent of this program is to spread the joy of reading and community
during the bleakest days of winter; and
WHEREAS, Bangor is a community of readers, as shown by the high circulation of
books from the library and the many bookstores supported by our
residents; and
WHEREAS, as this year’s work, the Library has selected Finding Amy: a True Story of
Murder in Maine by Joseph K. Loughlin and Kate Clark Flora;.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERRY G.M. PALMER, JR., COUNCIL CHAIR OF THE
CITY OF BANGOR, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND CITIZENS OF
BANGOR, do hereby proclaim the month of January 2009 as a time for “Penobscot
Reads.” I call upon all of our citizens to read Finding Amy, to join in discussions of
this work, both informally and by participating in the various public events scheduled at
the Bangor Public and other area libraries, and to make a special effort to explore the
joys of literature.
Given this the 22nd day of December 2008.
