HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-04-28 Proclamation (2) Proclaiming May 12-16, 2008 as Commuter Challenge Week in Bangor and Recognizing th the 14 Anniversary of the Event WHEREAS, 14 years ago, municipal leaders, transportation planners, transit providers, and bicycle- pedestrian advocates worked together to found Commuter Challenge, a week long event in the State of Maine; and WHEREAS, this annual event raises the awareness of hundreds of Bangor area commuters and their employers about cost-effective, healthy, environmentally friendly commuting options, including the BAT bus service, carpools, vanpools, biking, and walking; and WHEREAS, Maine commuters from Kittery to Fort Kent will make alternative transportation choices during Commuter Challenge Week, thereby eliminating 57,000 automobile trips, reducing 585,000 automobile miles and over 15 tons of harmful pollution, and saving 23,000 gallons of gasoline and $380,000 in commuting costs; and WHEREAS, the Commuter Challenge is possible only through the continuing dedication, collaboration and support of a wide spectrum of individuals and organizations from all walks of life and all areas of Maine who are committed to improving our environment, the health of Maine citizens, and the quality of life enjoyed in our towns and cities; and th WHEREAS, Maine citizens will celebrate the 14 anniversary of the Commuter Challenge in Bangor and throughout the state during the week of May 12 – 16, 2008; NOW, THEREFORE, I, SUSAN M. HAWES, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, ON BEHALF OF THE thth CITY COUNCIL AND CITIZENS OF BANGOR, do hereby proclaim May 12 to 16 as Commuter th Challenge Week and recognize the 14 anniversary of this event. All Bangor residents, commuters, businesses, and service organizations are encouraged to participate by taking the 2008 Challenge and to commute to work another way on at least one day of that week. th Given this the 28 day of April 2008. ________________________________ Susan M.
