HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-02-23 Proclamation RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 25, 2009 AS “BANGOR CHARTER DAY” WHEREAS, Bangor began its existence in 1769’s as Kenduskeag Plantation, growing rapidly to over 500 residents by 1790; and WHEREAS, in 1790, a petition to incorporate a town by the name of Bangor was carried by the Reverend Seth Noble to the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; and WHEREAS, the petition for incorporation was enacted by the Massachusetts House of Representatives on February 24, 1791 and by the Senate on February 25, 1791; and WHEREAS, an act to incorporate the plantation of Kenduskeag into a town by the name of Bangor was then signed into law by John Hancock, the then Governor of Massachusetts and a signer of the Declaration of Independence; and thth WHEREAS, in addition to our celebration of Bangor’s 175 birthday as a City on February 12 of this year, February 25, 2009 will mark Bangor’s anniversary as an incorporated town; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERRY G.M. PALMER, JR, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize February 25, 2009 as “Bangor Charter Day” as an incorporated town and urge all of our residents and friends to join us, in thth this 175 year after our incorporation as a City, to recognize the significance of February 25, 1791, the date on which Kenduskeag Plantation took the name Town of Bangor.
