HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-03-23 Proclamation RECOGNIZING NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS STUDENTS FOR THEIR “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO” PROJECT WHEREAS, a series of radio interviews entitled “Know Before You Go” conducted by broadcast journalism students at the New England School of Communications prior to last November’s elections has won a prestigious national award from the Broadcast Education Association; and WHEREAS, the “Know Before You Go” series was based on telephone interviews conducted by freshman broadcast journalism students with some 24 candidates for local and state offices that were subsequently condensed by upper class students into short radio profiles broadcast by Husson University radio during the week prior to the election; and WHEREAS, in April, the Broadcast Education Association will present NESCOM students with its third place award for specialty on-air programming in the student audio category; and WHEREAS, among the award recipients in this category are such recognized institutions as Brigham Young University, Southern Illinois University, Marshall University, and Appalachian State University; and WHEREAS, a total of 36 students of instructors Susan Patten and Anne Gabbianelli O’Reilly were involved in this project; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERRY G.M. PALMER, JR, COUNCIL CHAIR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and the citizens of Bangor, do hereby recognize the NESCOM students involved in the “Know Before You Go” project for the outstanding quality of their work and the national award they have earned from the Broadcast Education Association. Further, by profiling local candidates, including candidates for the Bangor City Council, this project served the University and Bangor communities by providing information to voters that assisted them in making their choices at the polls last November and is an outstanding example of both journalistic excellence and community service.
