HomeMy WebLinkAbout2007-04-09 Proclamation HOLOCAUST DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945; and WHEREAS, Jews were the primary victims – six million were murdered; gypsies, the handicapped, and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons. Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners, or war and political dissidents also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and WHEREAS, we, the people of the City of Bangor, must always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust, remain vigilant against bigotry and tyranny, and actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of equality and justice for all; and WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance have been set aside for us to remember the inhumanity of those who perpetrated the Holocaust, to reflect upon our shared humanity, and to rededicate ourselves to respecting all of the peoples of the world; NOW, THEREFORE, I, RICHARD D. GREENE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of the City Council and the Citizens of Bangor, hereby recognize the efforts of the Congregation Beth Israel in th organizing this important remembrance on April 15 @ 3:00 p.m. in memory of the victims and the survivors of the holocaust and their liberators. I further proclaim that we, the citizens of Bangor, must continuously strive to overcome intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance. th Given this the 9 day of April 2007. ___________________________________ Richard D.
