Councilman 556 MECHANICAL ENGINEER LEFINITION This is professional mechanical engineering work involving supervision of Journeymen mechanics and maintenance supervision in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment in a municipal garage. The employee is responsible for the complete control of the central repair shop where automotive, construction and other mechanical a ,meat is serriped and repaired. Only general administrative supervision as received from the public works director, and the employee develops procedures for getting the work done. Work is reviewed primarily by the quality of performance of repaired equipment and through the inspection of records and reports submitted. EXAMPLES OF WOAR PERFORMED (Any one position may not include all of the duties tater, nor To 75e lasted examples include all taeka which may be found in positions of this class.) Directs operation of Central Garage, plans, lays out and inspects the work of automotive mechanic supervisors. Participates in and directs repair work involving more difficult mechanical tasks. Checks parts lists for new repair parts ro be ordered and maintains contacts with local suppliers for emergency repair parts. Determines the need for major overhaul o£ motors, clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes and steering assemblies of equipment and directs the ser- vicing of automotive equipment. Performs related work as. required. MUIRED ENMEOGES. SKILLS AND ABILITIES Thorough knowledge of fleet management. Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, methods, equipment, and tools. of the automotive mechanic trade. Thorough knowledge of the principles and operation of internal combustion engines, including diesel powered engines. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of shop management. Skill in the use of tools and in the operation of machines aqui equipment employed in automotive equipment repair and maintenance. Ability to plan, assign, and review the work of automotive mechanics and other employees engaged in automotive repair and servicing work. Ability to locate and define defects in automotive equipment. Ability to make estimates of time and materials needed for repairs. DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field. Considerable experience in fleet management and garage supervision.
