PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 2, 2010 AS BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION DAY
WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America celebrates its centennial in 2010; and
WHEREAS, scouting has been an integral part of life in Bangor for 100 years; and
WHEREAS, the Boy Scouts of America has provided a program of character development,
physical fitness and mental awareness to over 111 million youth of the United States
in the past 100 years: and
WHEREAS, there are over 2.8 million youth members and 1.2 million adult volunteers in the Boy
Scouts of America, in more than 300 councils throughout the United States,
sponsoring service projects to address such critical issues such as poverty, health,
hunger, illiteracy and the environment in their local communities; and
WHEREAS, The Scout Oath, “I promise to do my duty, to God and my country and to obey the
Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake and morally straight’ inspires members to become good citizens,
encourages high ethical standards, promotes good will and service in our City and
surrounding communities, and
WHEREAS, The Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America covering all of Maine from Newport
northwards serves over 2,700 youth in 173 units; and
WHEREAS, The Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will hold its Centennial Camporee
with a display of scouting skills at Bass Park October 1, 2 and 3, 2010,
NOW THEREFORE, I, RICHARD I. STONE, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, on behalf of
the City Council do hereby proclaim October 2, 2010 as BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA,
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION DAY. The Boy Scouts of America are recognized and congratulated
for providing one hundred years of opportunity for over more than 100 million boys and young men
nationwide.
