HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-02-09 Proclamation TH RECOGNIZING THE 150 ANNIVERSARY OF THE BANGOR BAND WHEREAS, the Bangor Band, founded in 1859 and one of our nation’s oldest continuous th community bands is celebrating its 150 anniversary this year; and WHEREAS, the history of the Band is deeply intertwined with that of Bangor and the State of Maine; and WHEREAS, it served as a regimental band attached to the Fourteenth Maine Regiment during the Civil War and had the distinction of being present in February 1865 when Union forces recaptured Fort Sumter; and WHEREAS, the Band continues to embrace and maintain its tradition of developing future generations of talented young musicians by recruiting them as members and th providing a newly created scholarship program commemorating its 150 anniversary; and WHEREAS, the Band annually honors its commitment to its community by providing free concerts and appearing in parades and other celebrations; and WHEREAS, throughout its 150 year history, the band has held firm to its mission of maintaining a quality musical organization which is a credit to itself and an honor to the City whose name it bears; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GERRY G.M. PALMER, JR., MAYOR OF THE CITY OF BANGOR, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE CITIZENS OF BANGOR, do th hereby congratulate the Bangor Band on the occasion of its 150 anniversary and express our thanks to its past, current, and future members for their service to our community. th Given this the 9 day of February 2009. __________________________________ Gerry G.M.
