City of Bangor, Commission on Cultural Development
February 8, 2018

Council Chambers, City Hall, 73 Harlow Street, Bangor
Commissioners Present: Kim Stewart, Amy Roeder, Jane Bragg, Andrea Littlefield, Tristine
Currier, Liam Riordan, Staff Liaison Katelyn Chase.
Commissioners Absent:Lovern Stockwell, Jared Hunnefeld, Clare Davitt, Allen Adams, Owen
Smith, Amy Blackstone
1.Welcome
Chair Kim Stewart called the meeting to order.
2.Approval of January’sMeeting Minutes
Changes to January’s meeting minutes:AmyRoeder’s organizationsImprovAcadia is
one word, LiamRiordan is in the Department of History at UMaine as well as the McGuillicuddy
Humanities Center, and JaneBragg is back on the Board of the Bangor Ballet.
Jane Braggmotionedto approve, Tristine Currier seconded.
3.Budget Update

Currently available $16,732.81(until June 30)to fund May grants and any additional
programing.
-New members encourage artists to apply for the May grant cycle.
4.Arts & Cultural Policy
This copy was published in 2014 when George Kinghornwas chair. The policy has to be
updatedevery 5 years, so 2019 will have to update again. In the past, there was a committee for
each of the 5 sections. Moving forward the CCD will be combining committees to save on time
and bring focus to the most important tasks.
5.Form Committees
Since many memberswere unable to attend the meeting,Chair KimStewartwill make a google
doc to send to all commission members, asking them to sign up for a committee. This year’s
committee’s will be as follows:
-Funding committee
The main focus will be to apply forthe largestgrant funded by MAC and
National endowment of the arts, and on raising funds for the commission.
Commission member Tristine Currier volunteered as a committee member.
-Programming & education committee
Will focus oncreating opportunities to engage the public in arts in culture in the
region.
Commission member Amy Roeder volunteered to be on the committee.
-Marketing committee
The marketing committee will focusonbringing awareness to the Arts in
Downtown Bangor, helping advertise for events such as Artober, upcoming grant
deadlines and community art events.
Commission member AndreaLittlefield volunteered to Chair the committee.
Once committees have formed, they will set a monthly meeting. Committees should set goals for
the year at their first meeting.
6.Other Business

The Maine Discovery Museum’s Science festival is coming up, the 3weekend in
March.
Bangor ballet has booked a performance at theGracie in Dover-Foxcroft/
The University of Maine HumanitiesCenter will hold apanel at the science festival,
regarding land trusts and how nature helps one self-reflect

April 7
will be a State-wide National History day at UMaine from 9-2pm. If anyone
wants to be a judge for the over 200 students who attend, please contact Liam Riordan.
There will be a Blood drive held at Hollywood slotsheld this Friday. Please make an
appointment at RedCross.com.

Penobscot theatre is currently showing Escanaba in da Moonlight until February 21, and
will be hosting a workshop with Craig Bokhorn next Saturday from 10-1230pm.
At the Maine Science festival will be a workshop around usingimprov as a therapy for
those who have been through trauma.

Ethic goals disclosures for commission members are due on February 28.
